Cranes remove final traces of Goodyear in Wolverhampton
Cranes are removing the last of the equipment from the iconic Goodyear factory ready for the bulldozers to move in.
Just 15 members of staff remain at the once bustling site in Wolverhampton which employed 7,000 people at its height.
The demolition of the factory is expected to get under way within weeks and it is thought the cranes are winching away the last of the heavy machinery and equipment from the top floors.
Since the start of the year work has been on-going to close down the Stafford Road site following a decision by bosses it had become unprofitable.
Later this month it is expected Goodyear will hand the site to developers St Modwen for 200 new homes to be built.
The closure brings 90 years of tyre making in the city to an end.
Cyril Barrett, chairman of the Unite branch at Goodyear, said: “The cranes are in there to take the equipment off the roofs as far as I understand it.
"To watch this process this year has been heartbreaking. I have spoken to many of the staff who have been made redundant over the last 18 months and there is a great sense of bitterness.”
