The 700,000 sq ft Staffordshire fulfilment centre will take 44 of the new operations apprentices, joining a workforce that has grown to around 2,000 this year.

In total, there will be 100 operations apprenticeships available across the UK and these add to Amazon’s existing apprenticeship programmes in IT and Facilities & engineering available at its delivery centres.

Operations apprentices will undertake a 24-month programme of on-the-job learning, gaining hands-on experience of logistics, leadership, safety and quality assurance.

The Rugeley centre is 700,000 sq ft

Amazon says they will also benefit from mentoring from leading experts and have the chance to work on specialist projects alongside other apprentice colleagues.

At the end of their programme apprentices will graduate with recognised qualifications and the experience and skills needed to accelerate their career.

Scott Wharton, general manager at the Rugeley fulfilment centre, said: “Our fulfilment centres roles are at the heart of our business and so we’re really excited to announce our plans for an operations apprenticeship this autumn.

He added: “At Amazon we strive to hire the best people from the communities in which we operate and to create opportunities for our employees to learn and to develop in their careers.

"A dedicated operations apprenticeship is another great way to support this and I look forward to meeting our new recruits and supporting them to fulfil their potential over the course of their programme.”

The operations apprenticeship course will be delivered jointly by Amazon and training and recruitment company People Plus.

Once they complete the two year course Amazon says apprentices will have the opportunity to apply for a new role within the company as a lead or analyst in inventory control quality assurance, an operations lead or to work in the safety team.

Applications are open until next Wednesday, July 19, and candidates must be over 18 with a minimum of five GCSEs of Grade C or above, including English and Maths.
