The clock is ticking for businesses across the Black Country and the wider West Midlands who have less than four weeks to take up an offer of free training for their employees at City of Wolverhampton College.

With the national apprenticeship levy set to kick in from May 1, the college is offering firms the chance to boost the skills of their workforce if they sign up by the end of April.

Under the scheme, employers signing up staff for an adult apprenticeship programme before April 30 will not have to pay for the employee to study for their relevant qualification at the college.

The offer is for staff aged 19 and over and the apprenticeship agreement must be signed by all parties before April 30, before the introduction of the apprenticeship levy.

Claire Boliver, principal of the college, said: "Apprenticeships are a great way for employers to up-skill their staff by enabling them to continue working for the business while also studying for recognised qualifications at college.

"This offer is a fantastic opportunity for employers to access free, high quality, industry-specific training prior to the introduction of the new funding arrangements."

Under the new scheme employers with a wage bill of more than £3 million will be subject to a levy for apprenticeship training, whilst those with lower bills will be required to contribute a percentage towards the cost of the programme.

The college's free training offer applies to apprenticeships in accountancy, barbering, business administration, customer service, early years, hairdressing, health & social care, improving operational performance, IT, leadership & management, marketing, retail, team leading and supervising, and youth work.
