Double celebration for Tividale veteran steel engineers
Steel profiling specialists Malthouse Engineering has a double reason to celebrate this year.
The company, which has its headquarters in Hainge Road, Tividale, is marking its 65th anniversary this year and the 30th year at the helm of long-serving managing director Roy Taylor.
Malthouse Engineering started trading in 1947 and has grown to become the UK's number one steel profiling company.
Since then Malthouse has become renowned for providing high quality steel profiling within the engineering industry.
Over the years the company has grown from a single site business to a five-site operation with a 160-strong workforce and a £20 million annual turnover.
The firm has acquired 14 companies along its manufacturing journey and continues to expand its workforce to keep up with demand. As well as Tividale it has a presence in Worcester, Wakefield, West Bromwich and Wednesbury.
Malthouse Engineering is now focused firmly on developing the next generation of manufacturers and shaping their skills.
In recent years the company has worked closely with the University of Wolverhampton and Birmingham City University as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme which brought in two graduates two support the development of the firms online marketing and the sales order processing systems.
The close working relationship has continued in recent months, with Roy Taylor being awarded an honorary doctorate of business administration for services to industry and also being invited to be an advisor for the Business School at the University of Wolverhampton.
Looking back at the reasons for the company's success and longevity, Mr Taylor said: "There are many factors – one of these is the consistency of management style."
There have only been two managing directors in the past, the founder Bert Hands having completed 35 years and Roy Taylor 30 years.
Under Mr Taylor's leadership turnover has grown from £1.5 million in 1983.
Another factor in Malthouse's success has been a continuous focus on innovation which has covered areas such as computer design, online marketing, sales databases, suggestion schemes, patents and intellectual property.
