Steve Burgin, who lives in Stafford, has been UK president for five years and will continue to be based in the UK and work from the business's offices in the town.

Terence Watson, who will also retain his current role as managing director of transport for Alstom in the UK and Ireland, will take over from Mr Burgin as the new UK President for the engineering firm and be based in London.

"I'm delighted to be taking on this new role with Alstom but will still be keeping very close ties with Stafford," said Mr Burgin who has a BSc honours degree in electrical engineering from Staffordshire University, where he is now chairman of governors and is a trustee and is also a fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Alstom employs around 6,500 people in the UK across all of its businesses.

It has about 5,000 in the Midlands with 2,000 people in Stafford, where it is the town's biggest employer, and the rest at sites in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Derby, Rugby and Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Stoke-on-Trent born Mr Burgin, who has worked in engineering for more than 30 years, started as a student apprentice with GEC in Stafford in 1975 and became the country president of its successor, Alstom, in January 2008.
