The creation of a long-awaited £65 million Sainsbury's store in Wolverhampton was today under way after diggers moved on to clear the land.

Groundworks have now begun at the site off Raglan Street in Graiseley, which is close to Ring Road St Mark's.

The supermarket giant was given the green light to build a new superstore on the land following a 10-year battle with rival Tesco.

Sainsbury's spokesman Richard Harris said today: "Sainsbury's has begun carrying out site preparation works for its new development."
