Schooldays for 1960s Stafford youngsters

Take a look at this lot – it's about time they retired, don't you think?

Ray's 1960s picture of Stafford schoolchildren.

They are now coming up to that age, according to one of these children, Ray Downes, who sent us this photo.

"It's a class photo from St John's C of E Primary School, Weston Road, Littleworth, Stafford," says Ray, who was in that class.

"It has since been demolished but was a part of St John's Church on the junction of Weston Road and Westhead Avenue. After checking on Google, St John's House now stands on the site.

"If my memory serves me correctly – it's 50 years-plus since the photo was taken – I attended the school from 1960 to 1965, but moved to Yorkshire just before leaving to attend secondary school.

"It was found among a number of photographs passed on to me by my mum some years ago.

"Even though it's a long time ago I do remember some faces.

"Front row, third from left, is 'George.' I'm sure his parents ran a Chinese laundry in Stafford. Second row, fourth from the right is Vicky Hensa. Third row, far left and far right, and David and Richard, who were twins. Third from the left is Ian Clarke, who lived at 21 Cull Avenue. I have no idea why I can remember his address. Third from the right is me. Back row, far left, is Linda Hughes.

"I now live in Birstall, West Yorkshire, and am getting ready retire, as will most of the people in the photograph. I just thought it may interest some of your readers."
