Frank's photos capture deadly attacks
These dramatic photos from old soldier Frank Jennings are from a conflict which continues to simmer to this day.
And while it happened in what we call the "post war" period, the dangers for Frank and his colleagues were very real.
Now 92, he is keen that the events in Palestine, and the efforts and sacrifices of those who served there, are not forgotten.
In 1947 he was serving in Palestine in the 2nd Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. British soldiers in Palestine were targeted by Jewish terrorists seeking to set up their own homeland, and there were clashes too between Jews and local Arabs.
The details of the convoy attack in Frank's pictures underline the complexity of the situation on the ground.
"A Jewish convoy had been attacked by Arabs who came down on them from the hills," said Frank, from Great Barr, Birmingham.
"Scottish soldiers of the Argylls went to help the attacked Jews, but in turn the Arabs attacked the Scots. They lost about six or seven chaps, including an officer.
"At the same time we in the Lincolns, 2nd Battalion, had to go to a troop train that had been blown up by terrorists. Mad, isn't it?
"We were in between two lots. We couldn't win.
"Some of these photos haven't seen the light of day since being taken by a friend of mine with a box camera. Should he have done so?
"When we came out of Palestine in May 1948 there was more or less no railway left.
"On that train, 36 died and 27 were injured."
