The Mallard ducklings were separated from their mum after becoming trapped between two canal locks by Islington Gates in Birmingham City Centre on April 4.

An RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) found the baby ducks perched on a high ledge has their 'distressed' mother circled below.

ARO Baljit Dhamia from the animal rescue charity was able to safely rescue the lucky ducks and set them free to paddle back to their mother.

ARO Baljit said: “The babies and their mum seemed quite distressed at being separated. I managed to capture the four ducklings and took them down to the water’s edge to reunite them with their mum.

“They were a little bit scared to make the leap, so I gave them a helping hand back to mum before they happily swam off.

“It was lovely to see the family reunited and paddling off down the canal together - it was definitely a happy ending. No ruffled feathers here!”

The heart-warming rescue took place at around 10.05am on 4 April.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA added: "When an animal is in need, the quicker they get help the better. We have lots of advice on our website to help the public to safely handle and transport a small animal in need."
