Jacek Lagowski already had three previous driving convictions in the two years preceding the incident, which happened on the northbound carriageway near West Bromwich on December 29 last year.

Wolverhampton Crown Court was shown footage of Lagowski driving the Audi at 50mph in the inside lane of the busy motorway and swerving inwards.

He clipped another car which flipped his own car over and careered into the middle lane, causing extensive damage to two  more vehicles.

The collision left the section near junction one closed for nearly an hour while crews from West Midlands Fire Service and National Highways cleared the area.
