Air ambulance to Staffordshire prison after prisoner stabbed

An air ambulance was called to a Staffordshire prison after an inmate was stabbed.

The incident took place at Swinfen Hall Prison, near Lichfield, on the afternoon of March 21.

Swinfen Hall is a young offender institute and prison where offenders aged between 18 and 25 are offered training to develop skills.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.25pm on Friday, March 21 to reports that a prisoner at HMP YOI Swinfen, near Lichfield, had been stabbed.

"The man was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. He has since been discharged. Enquiries are ongoing."

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed crews were called at 4.17pm to an "incident" at Swinfen Hall Prison.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: "One ambulance, a paramedic officer, a Medical Emergency Response Incident Team trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford attended. 

"Upon arrival we found a man with serious injuries. He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene before being conveyed to hospital for further treatment.”

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We cannot comment on a live police investigation.”
