Walsall Council, which manages the site, has introduced a new private waiting area to be used by visitors, directors and celebrants.

The changes come as the council has launched a review into the authority’s bereavement services.

When the budget for 2025/26 was presented to all elected members at the full council on February 26, councillor Aftab Nawaz moved that burial fees should be reduced by 12.5 per cent and that out-of-hours burial fees to be reduced by 25 per cent.

The majority of the members were against the amendment, including the leader of the council, councillor Garry Perry.

Councillor Perry agreed bereavement services required a reform and last week launched a consultation period for residents to have their say on the services.

The changes to the reception at Streetly Crematorium follow broader site improvements to the estate.

Landscaping, upgrading the chapel exit garden and changing the road layout to improve access for visitors have all taken place over the last two years.

Walsall Council spent £3,245 on furniture and £1,995 on contractor costs as part of the renovations.

The closing date to respond to the council’s consultation on bereavement services is April 21, 2025. To complete the survey online, click here.

Paper copies are available to pick up in all Walsall libraries. To access the survey in an alternative format, email consultations@walsall.gov.uk or call 01922 650000.
