Major road to Black Country town to close for five months to build a railway station

Major works on a busy Black Country town centre road will cause the route to be closed for five months affecting motorists and bus users.

From Friday, Bilston Street in Willenhall - the B4484 - will be closed to southbound traffic for development work on the town's new railway station which is due to be in operation from March 2026.

The road will remain closed until August 11 between the New Road mini island to its junction with Rosehill for the work to be carried out by Transport for West Midlands contractors.

Today (Monday, March 24) West Midlands Roads warned all road users to 'expect delays' and to 'plan ahead'. There is a southbound closure on Bilston Street adn Rose Hill Gardens.

National Express West Midlands warned of a diversion on the Wolverhampton bound number 25 service from New Road and Walsall Street/Walsall Road via Crescent Road and Bilston Lane.

The 25 service to Pendeford will follow its normal line of route.

Here are more details of the works at Willenhall Station from Transport for West Midlands:

As part of the ongoing development of the new Willenhall Railway station, works will be taking place at Bilston Street, Willenhall.

From Monday 24 March to Monday 16 June• Phase 1 - Southbound closure on Bilston Street and Rose Hill.

From Tuesday 17 June to Monday 11 August• Phase 2 - Southbound closure on Bilston Street and Rose Hill.

From Friday 18 July to Monday 11 August• Phase 3 - Southbound closure (weekdays)• Full closure on Bilston Street (weekends only)

Buses

The following bus services will be on a diversion from Sunday 23 March:

National Express: Service 25 Towards Wolverhampton via New Road, Walsall Street, Walsall Road, Crescent Road and Bilston Lane.

Diamond: Service 57 Towards Bilston via New Road, Walsall Street, Walsall Road, Crescent Road and Bilston Lane.

Both services will use Willenhall Market Place bus stop instead of Bilston Street bus stop during these works.

Bilston Street Bridge will be closed to Southbound traffic but will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians.  

Car users

A clearly signed diversion route will be available for residents and businesses with traffic diverted via the A462/ Shepwell Green for B4590/ Bilston Lane and B4464/ Summerford Place for A454/ The Keyway.

Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.  

New rail stations in the Black Country

The new stations being built in James Bridge in Darlaston and in Willenhall are funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority with the help of £1 billion in funding from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.

Two trains per hour will call at both stations when the long-awaited schemes are completed. 

The two railway stations are being built along the Walsall – Wolverhampton line at Darlaston and Willenhall.

Willenhall station will provide quicker and more reliable journeys to places like Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Walsall, reducing congestion and pollution.

The station will have 2 platforms, lifts, ticket machines, information screens and secure bike parking.
