The powers were originally in place until 10am today and covered all of the Walsall borough, however, they have since been extended, with the powers now remaining in place until 8am on Wednesday morning.

Detective inspector Joe Davenport, leading the investigation at West Midlands Police, said: "We’re at a very early stage of the investigation and are working hard to understand what has happened and why.

“I’d urge anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or other footage from the area at the time to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

The powers allow police to stop and search people they suspect may have been involved in violence, or carrying weapons, without needing reasonable grounds.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed crews were called at 5.19pm to reports of a stabbing at the junction of Bloxwich Road and Norfolk Place.

The spokeswoman said: "One ambulance, three paramedic officers and a Medical Emergency Response Intervention Team trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene.

"Upon arrival, we found a man with life-threatening injuries. He received advanced life support and advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene before being conveyed to hospital for further treatment.”

Police later confirmed the man had died.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident, with the man remaining in custody today.

Anyone with information is asked to get in touch with police via their 101 number, or alternatively on the Live Chat service on their website, quoting reference number 4170 of 17 March.
