'I've never seen anything like this': Shocked Smethwick residents recall 'leak' which left nine people in hospital

Residents in Smethwick have spoken of their shock after nine people were taken to hospital due to a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

Emergency services responded to the incident on Firs Lane at around 6.30pm on Sunday (March 16) following reports of residents feeling unwell from 'breathing in fumes'.

The fumes are said to have affected the residents of a block of five houses.

Windows were left wide open to air the rooms out.

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) crews also responded, sending three fire engines to the scene. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus as they checked whether anyone was still inside the buildings.
