Climbing Hut, which already runs facilities in Shrewsbury and Ellesmere Port, has submitted plans to convert the huge former press room on Castle Street into a climbing centre.
It would mark the latest planned redevelopment of the Express & Star building, which is under the control of BAX Construction after the newspaper moved out in 2023 after 140 years.
Developments already in place or in development include the new Space cafe and bar on Castle Street, which was built into the former staff canteen, a new well-being and health centre and a planned development in the old offices into apartments, a gym and a number of leisure opportunities.

Plans show the centre would create a number of different walls, specifically designed for the various disciplines within climbing, with documents submitted to Wolverhampton Council showing that the new facilities would be built inside the former press hall.
Documents on the council website show that the centre would feature line climbing walls, alongside bouldering facilities and action climbing walls for younger athletes.
Council officials will now review the plans before deciding to approve or reject them.
