'It would mean so much to her': Wednesbury care home appealing for birthday cards for resident who is soon to turn 102

Dovedale Court Care Home resident Lilian Hollinshead, better known as 'Lil Hollinshead', will turn 102 on March 17.

Born in Wolverhampton, Lilian used to work for Sir Alfred Allen at a factory in Wednesbury that made tiny gloves.

She likes to spend her time going to church, as well as having a cup of tea and a catch-up with friends.

Staff at the Holyhead Road care home are helping make Lilian’s birthday wishes come true by taking her to visit her childhood home in Franchise Street, Wednesbury, where she used to live growing up and has fond memories, as well as taking her to Dudley Zoo to pet animals.

But in order to make it extra special, they have asked people to send a birthday card to Lilian with the hopes of giving her "at least" 102.

Dawn Allen, home manager at Dovedale Court Care Home, said: “From everyone here at Dovedale Court, we would like to wish Lilian a fantastic 102nd birthday. We look forward to celebrating Lilian’s birthday with her.

“To mark this amazing milestone birthday, we’re rallying together to get Lilian at least 102 birthday cards – one for every year of her incredible life.

"Whether it’s a store-bought card, a handmade masterpiece, or just a simple note, we want to fill her day with lots of love and laughter.

“It would mean so much to Lilian, reading the well wishes and messages from others in the local community.”

When asked the secret to a long and happy life, Lilian - who is hoping for a new handbag for her birthday - said: "Taking care of yourself and help those who can’t help themselves.”
