Police issue update after West Bromwich Albion fan arrested following reports of 'racist behaviour' towards QPR player

An investigation into suspected racial abuse of a QPR player during Saturday's fixture at The Hawthorns continues, police have said.

A 62-year-old man has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of making racist remarks towards a Queens Park Rangers player during their fixture against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday. 

The supporter was arrested by West Midlands Police over the alleged incident said to have taken place in the West Stand during the first half of the match. 

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "The man arrested has been released on police bail while the investigation continues."

West Bromwich Albion confirmed that an arrest was made and that the supporter's season ticket has been suspended, as well as threatening a lifetime ban if found guilty. 

Albion also took the chance to say they are supporting the investigation and are in contact with the visitors from West London. 

In an earlier comment, provided by West Midlands Police, the force reiterated their 'zero-tolerance' approach towards hate at football matches, and that they are working closely with the club to take action. 

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We take a zero-tolerance approach to hate at football and work closely with clubs to take action when necessary."
