West Midlands Police officers have said that a 62-year-old man has been arrested following a racial abuse incident at The Hawthorns stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The arrest comes following the West Bromwich Albion v Queens Park Rangers match which saw a Rangers player made the target of racist abuse.

The man was arrested by officers after another fan reported overhearing the abuse.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Our officers arrested the suspect after another fan reported overhearing the abuse.

"The man remains in custody on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and we are liaising with both clubs as the investigation continues.

"We take a zero-tolerance approach to hate at football and work closely with clubs to take action when necessary."

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information, is asked to get in touch with West Midlands Police via their 101 number, or alternatively via the Live Chat service on their website, quoting reference number 919 of 8 March.
