Aldi is set to move into a unit on the Oldbury Green Retail Park in Oldbury town centre having been given the green light by Sandwell Council in 2023.
The budget chain has now applied for a licence to sell alcohol from its newest Oldbury supermarket ahead of its opening.
Aldi will be opening the new supermarket in the old Argos and Shoezone units – which have been combined and extended under the application approved by Sandwell Council’s planners. The unit formerly occupied by Argos has been empty since 2020 after moving to the nearby Sainsbury’s and Shoezone relocated to a different unit on the retail park in 2024 but the store has been threatened with closure after the firm said it had experienced “very challenging trading conditions” in the last 12 months.

Around 30 jobs would be created, according to Aldi.
The new store at the Oldbury Green retail Park, off Oldbury Ringway, would become the second in the town after its Wolverhampton Road supermarket opened in 2015.
A statement included with the application approved in 2023 said: “Aldi’s occupation of the unit will be in addition to their existing store at Wolverhampton Road to the south of Oldbury.
“Aldi are not currently represented in the town centre, and the introduction of a discount retailer will enhance the choice of food shopping within the town centre, which is largely dominated by the existing Sainsbury’s store.
“In tandem, the proposal will provide new circa 30 new employment opportunities for local people and will represent a significant investment in the town centre in the context of the ongoing challenging economic conditions.
“The introduction of a discount retailer into the town centre will, importantly, provide a discount convenience shopping option in the town centre at a time when the cost of living crisis is necessitating more people to take advantage of lower cost convenience shopping options.”
