Several Tesco shops across the UK have been hit with a banana shortage - including the store on Penn Road, Wolverhampton - which has been without the fruit for two days.

Catherine Pickett, aged 51, of Penn, saw the shortage at Tesco on Penn Road, Penn. She said: “It was a bit strange - I had to pop in two days running for some bits including bananas but the shelves were completely clear.

"There were lots of confused look. You take these things for granted but clearly there are some problems with distribution. These things happen and I’m sure they will be back soon.”

Customers are facing empty shelves due to shipment delays caused by bad weather, reports say

Some supermarkets have placed signs on their empty shelves, which read: "We are sorry that bananas are out of stock due to bad weather conditions. We are working hard with our suppliers to refill our shelves."

Bananas are one of Tesco’s bestselling products, with most coming from Costa Rica, Ecuador and Colombia, the stores website states.

Around the same time last year, dozens of supermarkets including Tesco and Aldi were hit by banana shortages due to transatlantic storms.

Tesco have been contacted for a comment on the recent shortage.
