Cliff Tamou, a dad-of-six, had been driving a HGV on the M6 in Staffordshire on February 27 when it broke down.
The 58-year-old was out of the vehicle when it was involved in a crash with a Toyota Avensis on the southbound carriageway, between junctions 15 near Stoke-on-Trent and 16 near Crewe.
Mr Tamou, who lived in Wigan, died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, a man from Dudley, was taken to hospital with leg and facial injuries which were not thought to be life changing or life threatening.

He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, a Staffordshire Police spokesperson said.
Mr Tamou's heartbroken family has now paid tribute to him following his death.
They said: "Cliff Tamou, who moved to the UK over 30 years ago from New Zealand and settled in the Wigan area, was a devoted husband, father to six children and five grandchildren.
“He was a lorry driver for many years and loved playing, refereeing and coaching rugby. The family have asked for their privacy to be respected in this very sad time.”
His family are being supported by specially-trained police officers.
Staffordshire Police has appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the crash or those with information to get in touch.
People who can help should contact the force via the Live Chat function on its website, or by calling 101 and quoting incident 783 of February 27.
