A shop worker was struck with a shopping basket and threatened with a needle during a robbery.

The incident took place at a store on Yardley Wood Road in Birmingham at around 3.45am on January 2.

A man walked into the shop, took items and attempted to leave without paying, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.

A staff member was struck with a shopping basket and threatened with a needle upon trying to detain him, the spokesperson added.

The force has issued a picture of a man who officers want to speak to following the incident.
