Emergency services rush to bus on fire in Bilston town centre

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a bus fire in Bilston town centre.

West Midlands Fire Service rushed to the scene of Wood Street, Bilston, at around 3.15pm on Thursday following reports of a bus on fire. 

Video and images posted online show a National Express West Midlands bus with flames flicking out of its windows and smoke rising above the nearby buildings.

Two fire engines from Tipton and Bilston attended the scene, with no injuries being reported.

 A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: "Two fire engines from Bilston and Tipton stations arrived at the scene to find a single decker bus on fire.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used four hose reels to tackle the blaze. West Midlands Police colleagues were in attendance to assist with traffic management."

"The fire was brought under control and extinguished. One fire engine has left the scene and we will shortly be leaving the incident and handing over to West Midlands Police.

 "All passengers had exited the bus with no injuries before our arrival. National Express are arranging recovery of the vehicle. Oxford Street is expected to remain closed until the bus is recovered."

West Midlands Police could also been seen at the scene, blocking the road and making the site safe.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We were called to Wood Street, Bilston at around 3.12pm this afternoon (27 Feb) to reports of a bus on fire.

 "No injuries have been reported."

An investigation has started into the circumstances surrounding the fire, with police asking for anyone with information to get into contact with them directly. 

A police spokesperson said: "We remain in the area supporting our colleagues from WMFS.

 "Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to get in touch quoting log 3159 of 27 Feb." 

It is unknown yet the severity of the fire, however, emergency services have been approached for comment.
