The scene on Redwood Road in the Yew Tree Estate in Walsall on the border with Sandwell was busy on Thursday morning with police officers checking the street and Regal Fish Bar after a window was smashed following the incident.

The incident happened on Wednesday at around 8.40pm and had seen the area around Redwood Road cordoned off while the police investigation continued into Thursday afternoon.

Police officers could be seen combing the streets up and down the area near the takeaway, while there was also a heavy police vehicle presence at both ends of the cordon and officers out in the community to offer reassurance to residents.

Regal Fish Bar is set inside a maisonette which contains a number of shops and businesses, as well as flats set above the shops, and residents in some of those flats were still taking in what had happened the previous night.

One resident, who didn't want to be named, said he had heard a sound which he said he thought was fireworks, but then heard the sound of people running.

He said: "I was sitting in the house and heard what I later found out were gunshots, but thought it had been fireworks or something like that, and then I heard the sound of hooves on the ground, what sounded like a lot of people running.

"The police turned up not too long afterwards and it's good in a way that they're still here as it makes me feel a bit safer, but I'm still kind of scared as nothing like that has ever happened around here before.

"This area is usually pretty safe and I don't know where any of these people came from, but I hope it's just an isolated incident."
