Where are the West Midlands speeding hotspots? The 106 Black Country hotspots as a new speed camera vans are unveiled

New investment of nearly £200,000 by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster has seen the fleet of mobile speed enforcement camera vans double from four to eight

It means the force can be stationed at even more hot spot locations across the West Midlands to help put the brakes on speeding drivers.

The PCC said it considers road safety a top priority and has promised to work with partners to halve the number of people killed and seriously injured on West Midlands roads by 2030. It has also been revealed that the new speed vans can spot drink and drug drivers and other driving offenders from a mile away.

The speed camera vans can be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Those caught driving above the speed limit can be fined up to £1,000 and have penalty points added to their license.

Mobile cameras are deployed from the back of an enforcement van, allowing them to be moved around the West Midlands as needed. 

The mobile camera vans are clearly marked to indicate that they are conducting speed enforcement and operators will place additional temporary signing to warn of the camera and, if necessary, remind drivers of the speed limit, if no fixed signage is present. 

As a vehicle approaches, an experienced operator watches. If the vehicle is perceived to be breaking the speed limit, the camera is activated.

A laser measures the speed of the vehicle, which is then recorded onto a video of the vehicle.

Across the Black Country, there are 106 locations which have been identified by West Midlands Police as mobile camera enforcement locations and which can be viewed on the West Midlands Police Camera Enforcement Unit website.
