Ayub Khan was convicted of murder and conspiracy to rob on Friday at Birmingham Crown Court, with the 29-year-old, of Metchley Drive in Harborne, remanded ahead of sentencing on February 25.
The court heard how Khan was part of a group who ambushed the 43-year-old in Underwood Close on September 22, 2022.
Mr Hopley had been driving around a drug dealer and after arriving at the pre-agreed location, he was attacked by a group of robbers.
West Midlands Police said that Khan was carrying a knife at the time, although it also confirmed he wasn't the one who stabbed Mr Hopley as he tried to drive off.

However, the killing occurred during the group's robbery attempt and, shortly afterwards, Khan fled the UK.
After Khan left the country, three others were convicted over Mr Hopley's killing and involvement in the robbery and, overall, received more than 50 years imprisonment.
Khan was arrested on his return to England last September and following a trial he was convicted of murder and conspiracy to rob.
Mr Hopley managed to drive a short distance after being stabbed before collapsing at the wheel and crashing his car, but had been stabbed in the chest and later died from his injuries.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We've always sought to identify all those involved in his terrible death, continuing enquiries following the previous convictions.
"We now believe we've traced everyone who was part of the tragic events of 22 September 2022.
"Our thoughts remain with Mr Hopley's family and friends."
