Staffordshire Police's Road Traffic Team spotted a black Range Rover last night and pulled the driver over.

They were surprised when he gave them his date of birth.

The police team posted on social media: "This Range Rover decided to go through a red light without insurance. The driver attempted to convince us he was 30 years younger than he actually is!

"However our detective skills were too good for his blag."

The arrest was part of the force's Operation Lightning which is aiming to improve road safety, with over 200 people dying on the county's roads annually, by clamping down on criminals.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Operation Lightning is Staffordshire Police’s dedicated operation focusing on road safety, helping to make our county’s roads safer. It aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads of Staffordshire and to disrupt and deter criminals from using the road network.

"The 24/7 policing of Staffordshire’s roads is a shared approach involving with the whole force. Targeted education and enforcement activity takes place across the county and involves the force’s roads policing unit, together with Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, police community support officers, special constables and Community Speed Watch volunteers."
