With its unerring ability to focus on tiny little issues while ignoring great big ones, the Church of England is divided over the bread and wine used in Holy Communion. While some priests want gluten-free bread and alcohol-free wine to be offered to folk with allergies, others insist that only “purest” bread and “fermented juice of the grape” are acceptable to the Almighty.
When I was a little boy I helped my grandmother prepare the host for communion at our Methodist chapel. I've no idea what sort of bread we gave the worshippers, but the wine was Ribena. As far as I am aware, they all went to heaven.
