Joseph Gough, 41, was due to be sentenced for racial and religious harassment and assault at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) but failed to attend.

His lawyer Neil Geraghty told the court: "I've just been told by the defendant's brother he has been hacking at his arm with a meat cleaver this morning and saying he wants to kill himself."

"He is currently in Accident and Emergency being treated to the wounds to his harm so therefore is not here to be sentenced today."

Smith, who is currently residing in Harplands Hospital mental health unit in Stoke, committed the racial and religious harassment in Walsall last year.
