In the modern era, a lot of pubs have gone down the route of being many things for many people, serving food and putting on sports and entertainment.
There are plenty of places dotted across town and city centres where you can enjoy a gourmet pizza while playing pool or watching the Premier League on a big screen TV.
There are other pubs, however, which provide a much more stripped-down and traditional feeling, taking away the TVs and dart boards and concentrating on taking things back to basics.
The Stag & Scotch Micropub on Newport High Street is one of those places, a place that owner Darren Wood said was about being a place where people could sit down and have a chat over a beer with no loud distractions.
Opened in December last year, the pub was the next stage for Mr Wood, who had run Joule's Brewery's The New Inn on Stafford Road for seven years, then run his own event company, but said he had always wanted to run his own place and decided to go for it when an empty shop became available.

He said: "I always had one eye on doing something small, something which focussed on great selections of cask ales which, primarily, were from the area.
