I visited an NHS dentist in Wednesbury that is expanding so it can treat more patients

A common complaint, almost the same as getting to see a doctor, is being able to get on the register for an NHS dentist.

Despite a promised £200m of government funding a year ago, the problem persists, according to Manjeet Bhandal of Crankhall Lane Dental Practice who is expanding the practice to the tune of £500,000.

In November 2024 The British Dental Association said NHS dentistry has "ceased to exist" for new patients as it called for the Government to "rescue" the service.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics' health insight survey in November 2024 also showed 13 per cent of the 1,139 respondents in the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board area did not have a dentist. The survey said 65 per cent had an NHS dentist and 22 per cent a private dentist.

Nationally, queues were reported in Bristol on Friday in attempts to get an NHS appointment.
