The West Midlands is a melting pot of different towns, cities and villages, spread across a huge geographical area in a region with industrial towns, wide open spaces and so much heritage.

From the border of Wales to the edge of the Peak District and from the edges of Birmingham to the Staffordshire Moorlands, it's an area full of diversity, culture and a real sense of civic pride for those living in the region.

However, it begs the question of what town, city or the village is the best, according to the people who live there? What do people think is their favourite place across the whole region?

We posed this question on the Express & Star Facebook page a few days ago, which generated a lot of response and a real competition among towns, cities and villages to say which one was the best or most popular.

Here are the top nine towns, cities and villages in the West Midlands, according to locals:

Bilston Town Hall is a Grade II-listed venue and a highlight of a visit to Bilston
Bilston Town Hall is a Grade II-listed venue and a highlight of a visit to Bilston

The market town of Bilston topped the list of favourite places, with the market and Majors Chippy listed as reasons why people love it.

Historically a hub for enamelling and steel production, Bilston also has a Grade II-listed venue in the town hall and is a popular place for music and shows at the Robin.

The market days see a wide range of items sold, while Majors Chippy has been a staple in the town for decades and the Trumpet Pub was voted one of the top 100 pubs in Europe in a recent survey.

St Peter's Collegiate Church in Wolverhampton city centre is one of the stand out parts of Wolverhampton

Second on the list is the city of Wolverhampton, a multi-cultural city which has more than 1,000 years of history.

It is home to architectural wonders such as Wolverhampton Art Gallery, St Peter's Church and the Grand Theatre and has become a popular hub for music and entertainment at the newly refurbished Civic and Wulfrun Halls.
