East Park Academy was placed in a "precautionary lockdown" on Monday (February 3) afternoon.
Alan Rogers, headteacher of the Hollington Road school, in Wolverhampton, said none of its pupils were involved in the incident.
Mr Rogers said: "Following a local community incident yesterday (Monday) afternoon, the school initiated a precautionary lockdown on police advice.
"No East Park pupils were involved, and they remained safe throughout. We greatly appreciate our parents' and families' patience and support in remaining calm and helping ensure a swift resolution."
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, West Midlands Police said it received a report of a man with a machete in Merrick Road in Wednesfield at around 3.15pm on Monday (February 3).
A spokeswoman for the force said after initial enquiries, it appears to have been an "isolated incident".
In a statement on Monday evening, the spokeswoman added: "Enquiries are continuing and we have officers on patrol in and around the area to offer and provide further reassurance to the community.
"Anyone with information is asked to get in touch via Live Chat quoting log 3400 of February 3."
