Disruption for rail passengers as police deal with incident near Aston station

A police incident on a road in Aston led to delays for rail passengers after the area around the railway station was closed off.

The Cross City line between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley was closed off at around 8.30am after reports of an incident between Birmingham New Street and Sutton Coldfield.

It left services unable to travel between the stations and rail replacement services being ordered to transport passengers.

A later message from West Midlands Roads at 8.54am confirmed the incident was taking place in Aston on Thimble Mill Lane and a 100 metre exclusion zone had been placed in the area, which also included Aston Rail station, with passengers urged to consider other routes for their journeys.

A spokesman for West Midlands Railway said at the time of the incident: "Emergency services dealing with an incident between Birmingham New Street and Sutton Coldfield

"Due to this incident, services are unable to travel between these stations.

"Rail replacement services have been ordered."

A spokesman for West Midlands Roads said at the time of the incident: "As a result of this incident, police have placed a 100 metre exclusion zone at Thimble Mill Lane in the Aston area which encompasses Aston Rail station. 

"If you're travelling in the area, please consider taking other routes for your journey."

The line was later confirmed as fully reopened by 9.16am, with West Midlands Railway confirming that the incident had been isolated and normal service had been restored.

British Transport Police have been contacted for a comment.
