Jailing Eugene Donovan at Wolverhampton Crown Court for more than 10 offences including wounding and robbery, Judge Jonathan Gosling said the offending was so prolific he was going to hand out a sentence which reflected it all.
Donovan, aged 39 and of no fixed abode but formerly of Sandown, Isle of Wight, carried out the offences, including one where he wounded a security guard, between January and February last year.
The first took place at Peacocks on Bearwood Road, Smethwick when he took clothes worth £450.
He later returned to the store, going to the perfume counter and stealing £430 of fragrances, threatening staff with a knife when challenged. In one robbery he had used the knife, injuring a security guard.
Donovan also carried out raids at Farmfoods in Bearwood, Sainsbury's in Oldbury and Aldi in Birmingham.
