The Government confirmed the settlement amount the West Midlands would receive as part of a landmark devolution deal.

The region is only one of two to be awarded this initial pot of money which will be used to boost key services such as transport, houses and employment support.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said the settlement, which will run from this April to March 2026, gives the West Midlands increased control of how money is spent in the area.

Mr Parker said: “This settlement shows the Government’s strong confidence and commitment in transferring more powers and responsibilities from Whitehall to the West Midlands.

“That means every penny can be targeted where it will have the biggest impact, on the things that matter most to people like jobs, affordable housing and better transport – all key priorities for me.

“This initial pot of money is just the start of a succession of multi-year settlements for the region. In return I will use that money to make bold, long-term decisions that create real opportunities for local people, making sure no community is left behind.”

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said: “Our country and local leaders have been held back for too long by outdated systems and bureaucratic box-ticking exercises, stifling growth and ambition.

“The West Midlands will now hold the reins on its own priorities – with Mayor Richard Parker driving forward meaningful change for working people, this landmark funding settlement will hand the West Midlands the keys to build more affordable homes, take back control of buses, and much more.

“This is our devolution revolution in action, and we are bringing forward this more flexible funding for more mayors next year to continue our Plan for Change to spread opportunities and growth to every region.”

Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution Jim McMahon OBE added: “This first integrated settlement is a landmark moment in our ambitious devolution agenda to empower our local leaders across the country.

“We have been clear from the start, we want to work hand in hand with our partners in local government, and see our fantastic mayors take more control of decision-making for their regions, so they can deliver on the matters closest to their voters’ hearts.

“I look forward to working with Mayor Parker, and all local leaders, who are absolutely central to delivering our national missions as part of our Plan for Change.”
