Arthritic 31-year-old horse found stuck in mud near Wolverhampton now recovering after rescue by firefighters

Rescue workers helped to lift a horse to its feet after the animal got stuck in mud.

Boswell the horse was found in fields near Gunstone Hall in Codsall physically exhausted and with arthritis in his rear hips preventing him from standing up on his own.

His owner Vicky Bennett praised Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service's animal rescue team which attended and helped Boswell back to his feet after an assessment from a vet who was called to the scene.

Boswell's owner Vicky Bennett was full of praise for the Cannock crew's efforts, stating: "What you did from start to finish was amazing. The time you spent explaining what was going to happen and what your team would try and do for us really reassured me that you would do your best for us.

"It helped me more than you will ever know."

Boswell, aged 31, is now back to his normal self after the incident which happened on January 23.

"Any time your team want pony cuddles you are more than welcome to pop over, he is being spoiled by everyone," she added.

Watch manager Jason Maudsley of Cannock Fire Station said: "Despite the difficulties we all faced there was only one plan on our mind and that was to ensure the horse was up and standing as soon as possible.

"I'm glad we all achieved it.
