Allen Karam Chand was set upon while waiting for the number 74 bus on Soho Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham at around 3.30pm on January 14.
He was taken to hospital but died in hospital the following weekend.
A preliminary post mortem revealed Mr Chand died as a result of a head injury, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.
In a touching tribute issued by the force, the victim's family said: "Our father was loving, caring, and never deceived anyone.
"He taught us to respect the law as an ex-army man and we will always miss him.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
"Jesus said whoever believes in me, though he may die he shall live."Our father is not physically with us but he is alive with Lord Jesus."
Muntahar Ahmed, aged 43 and of no fixed address, was arrested following the incident and charged with wounding on January 17.
He appeared at court the next day and was remanded to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on February 14.
As a result of Mr Chand’s death, West Midlands Police said it is reviewing the charge in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service.
A force spokesperson said: "We still want to hear from anyone with information, particularly any dashcam or mobile phone footage. You can send it directly to our officers here: Public Portal (mipp.police.uk)
"We can also be reached via 101 or Live Chat, or via contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
