The council said the new and improved facilities will encourage boaters to visit and extend their stays which in turn will create a vibrant and active waterfront for casual visitors, shoppers and visitors to the New Art Gallery Walsall.
It is due to carry out a series of works to create a more attractive, greener and more open and inviting space around Gallery Square and Park Street. The scheme is also aimed at better connecting High Street near the market to the waterfront area which has restaurant and entertainment facilities.
Associate council leader Adrian Andrew said: “The plans for the town centre look great and are much needed. We’ve worked with consultants and architects to create a plan that will open up Park Street, introduce more greenery and create a more inviting and attractive space.
“We hope that a more accessible, attractive town centre will drive footfall and create more opportunities for leisure and business.”
The scheme is part of the borough’s rolling £1.5 billion programme of transformation which includes some funding to improve Walsall town centre and is funded through the government's Town Deal.
Other projects include the installation of a new footbridge at Walsall Waterfront and the major redevelopment of the Saddlers Centre.
