Originally from Kurdistan (North Iraq), Dr Suha Ahmed moved from the Middle East to the Netherlands before making a final stop in the United Kingdom, Suha has always had a passion for learning but admits it was a challenge at first having to get used to life in the UK.
The wife and mother - which she says are both priority roles where she grew up - speaks English as her third language and had to work around them to successfully complete her studies.
Suha said: “Not being familiar with the academic world in the UK and how to progress was quite challenging at times. Having dyslexia and heading to University was initially a daunting prospect.
“However, I had an incredible amount of support from my thesis supervisors at the University of Wolverhampton. The supervisors helped me understand journal articles but also supported me in writing which helped lift a lot of pressure off my shoulders.
“As part of my course, we had theory modules but also given opportunities to put into practice what we learnt. Receiving feedback from my supervisors was incredibly useful and skills/theories gained from University, I’m now applying to my work.
“My job sees me work with different age groups and conduct psychological assessments, which informs treatment, support as well as recommendations for patients. I also train staff and conduct neurodevelopmental assessments, providing support for patients who have autism and ADHD.”
Reflecting on her time at the University of Wolverhampton, Suha said: “I have so many fond memories but one thing that stands out from my time at the University is the amount of friends I made, whom I am still in touch with.
“At the University, I was able to spend time and learn from friends of different nationalities which felt inclusive.
“Don’t be afraid to pursue your career and goals. Life will throw curveballs at you but with support from the University, you can work your way through challenges.
“It’s taken time to get to where I am in my career but I managed to get there by throwing myself into opportunities and learning from them.”
A spokesperson for the University of Wolverhampton, said: "Graduates are encouraged to keep in touch with the Alumni team and take advantage of a range of benefits and support on offer to them including a discount for Postgraduate study and opportunities to benefit from volunteering and career advice.
