Allen Karam Chand, aged 82, was set upon while waiting for the number 74 bus on Soho Road in the Handsworth area of Birmingham at around 3.30pm on January 14.
He was taken to hospital where he died on Sunday (January 19), a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.
Mr Chand's family are said to have been informed and are being supported by officers.
Muntahar Ahmed, aged 43 and of no fixed address, was arrested and later charged with wounding in connection with the attack.
He appeared in court on Saturday where he was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on February 14.
As a result of Mr Chand’s death, West Midlands Police said it is reviewing Ahmed's charge in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service.
A post-mortem to establish the victim's cause of death is expected to be held in the coming days.
Det Insp Joseph Davenport, from the force's Homicide team, said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Chand’s family, and we’re doing everything we can to support them.
“We still really need to hear from people in the community who saw what happened, or the build-up to it. We believe there may a number of people who saw what happened who we have not yet spoken to.
“I’d urge them to come forward as soon as possible so we can continue to build as clear a picture as possible of what happened.”
