The mastiff-type dogs are said to have gone missing from an address in Trent Gardens on January 12 before they were found dead in a builders bag tied with blue rope to a mooring close to lock 14 on Birmingham Canal.

A member of the public first saw the bag, which was in the canal close to Smestow Steet, on January 13 but did not look inside it until they passed it again on January 17.

The bodies of the dogs were found in a builders bag in the canal.

They opened the bag to find the two dogs inside, which are thought to have died by drowning.

The owner has been informed and is said to have reported the dogs missing on the pets' microchips a few days earlier.

RSPCA Inspector Vicki Taylor, who is investigating, said: “There was no obvious cause of death or injury and they were in good condition. It appears they were drowned.

“Thanks to their microchips I have located the owner who is distraught. The dogs were registered as being lost after they went missing. The owner had been trying to find them and they had been reported missing on their microchips.

“If anyone knows what happened to these dogs, or knows how they came to be in the bag in the canal, I’d ask them to contact me on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 1430157.”
