Owners of empty homes in South Staffordshire will be charged more council tax

Owners of empty and second homes in the South Staffordshire area will be charged more council tax from next year.

The district council has issued a notice advising of the policy change which will affect properties which have been unoccupied or partially unfurnished for more than 12 months. And those deemed to be second homes.

It stated: "Notice is hereby given the council has made decisions regarding certain premiums for council tax in accordance with section12(2) of the Local Government Finance Act 2012 as amended by the Rating (Property in Common Occupation and Council Tax (Empty Dwellings) Act 2018.

"The following determinations were made from April 1, 2026, a premium of 100 per cent will be charged for homes which are unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for one year or more.

"From April 1, 2026 a premium of 100 per cent will be charged for second homes."
