Rahul Sharma, 31, of Hordern Road, Whitmore Reans, is standing trial at the city's crown court accused of raping and murdering sex worker Helen Kempster..
The woman, who was in her 40s, was left with serious head, face, neck and chest injuries after being attacked in Kingsland Road near West Park in the early hours of June 16, 2022 and died in hospital later that morning.
Under cross-examination by prosecution barrister Mr Peter Glenser on Friday the defendant admitted punching her in the face, but denied having sexual activity with her during the alleged incident in Kingsland Road in Whitmore Reans.
Mr Glenser told the jury that in a statement read aloud to the court, Sharma stated that a "trace amount" of semen allegedly found on Miss Kempster was a result of transfer by hand when he punched her and placed his hand "across" her mouth.
