'Controlled explosion' carried out by army in Walsall - residents evacuated

The army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team carried out the explosion near to Pugh Crescent, in the Bentley area of the town.

Police executed a warrant at an address on the road at about 6.30am on Wednesday (January 15).

A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession an offensive weapon.

In a statement on Friday, a West Midlands Police spokesman said: "He was taken into custody and has been bailed while our enquiries continue.

"The army’s EOD team carried out a small controlled explosion nearby with neighbouring properties evacuated as a precaution.

"We have officers in the area today to offer reassurance but we believe there is no risk to the community."
