A yellow weather warning for fog has come into force for the West Midladns, with the Met Office warning of possible travel disruptions including flight delays or cancellations.

The warning covering Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley and Sandwell, as well as, Stafford and the Shropshire areas and parts of Wales, Exeter, Oxford, Peterborough and York.

The weather warning will be in place until 11pm tonight (Thurday, January 16). But misty conditions are not forecast to end until 1am on Friday (January 17).

According to the Met Office fog and mist differ by how far you can see through them. Fog is when you see less than 1,000 metres away and if you can see furhther than 1,000 metres they call it mist.

The warning comes as some weather forecasters have predicted snow could return to the UK before the ned of January. With maps from WXCharts showing snow for citie in England, including Birmingham.

While the current yellow weather warning is in place the Met Office has warned of possible travel disruptions including low visibility in some areas, leading to difficult driving conditions and slower journey times for train and bus services.

The UK's national weather and climate service also said that flight travel may see some delays as a result of low visibility. However Birmingham Airport has not issued any warning for disruption this morning.

Met Office meteorologist, Clare Nasir, advised about the possible delays on Wednesday and Thursday: "The issue will be over the next few days, fog, as well as some pockets of frost as well where we see clearer skies.

“In fact, that’s how we see this evening and overnight, stubborn cloud anywhere from the Midlands, East Anglia down towards the South East. A lot of clouds across the northwest of Scotland, with some outbreaks of rain in between, and some clearer skies.

“Now, a few things happen through this evening and into Thursday. The cloud increases across Northern Ireland, you’ve seen some lovely sunshine today, more cloud through tomorrow.

“Elsewhere with those clearer skies, we’ll see probably some pockets of frost, so temperatures dipping close to freezing, if not below, and again, with a lighter breeze, fog will re-form anywhere from central and southern parts of England and Wales down towards the west country.

“First thing then tomorrow morning, the fog, yet again, could be slow to clear.

“A cold start across Wales, Northern England, southern Scotland. More cloud to begin Thursday across Northern Ireland, the central belt of Scotland, towards the northwest.”

The latest warning comes after flights were disrupted earlier this month as heavy snow, wind and ice caused runway closures and stoppages to operations at Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester airports.
