Drivers were held up for over an hour following the incident which took place between J15 Stoke and J16 Crewe at around 5.30pm.

Lane one was opened for a short time to allow traffic to pass through, but was closed again when clear-up crews attended the scene.

All lanes reopened just after 6pm.

National Highways said on social media at the time of the incident: "Delays of at least 60 minutes above normal travel times on #M6 north between J15 & J16 due to an earlier vehicle fire.

"Lane 1 has temporarily re-opened.  Lane 1 will be closed again once clear-up crews and service providers arrive. Please allow extra journey time."
