Semi-professional sportsman and builder Kevin Bambrick was last week jailed for 34 months for tricking eight householders into paying a combined almost £69,000 for work that he either never started or completed, often producing false invoices for materials.

Bambrick, aged 36, who has links to Oldbury, was described as being sometimes abrasive with victims with one stating how they were left with their home in very poor state of order for months afterwards.

The case was brought by Dudley Council. The borough's trading standards cabinet member Councillor James Clinton said: “We have shown time and time again that we will not hesitate to take action against traders who fail to meet their legal requirements.

“This is a shocking case of shoddy workmanship and the man responsible now faces the consequences of his actions.

“I would like to thank our officers for their hard work on this case and I commend the bravery of the people affected for coming forward.”

Bambrick, of Sanders Close, Dudley,  pleaded guilty to a single offence of participating in a fraudulent business carried on by a sole trader, contrary to section 9(1) of the Fraud Act 2006, and was jailed for 34 months at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Sentencing him Mr Recorder Michael Duck KC said Bambrick had taken a course of conduct which was wholly dishonest from the start and had continued over a prolonged period, with active deception.

Bambrick is listed on the Professional Darts Players Association website and played at a national level as well as leagues based in Dudley and Sandwell.
