Strikes and engineering works to cause disruption to trains in Shropshire and West Midlands - with Birmingham New Street closed all weekend

Strikes and engineering works are expected to cause disruption for railway passengers from Shropshire and the West Midlands this weekend.

RMT trade union announced a strike taking place tomorrow (Sunday) affecting Avanti West Coast services. 

The firm's trains do not stop in Shropshire, but passengers getting connections at Wolverhampton, Birmingham New Street - which is closed for engineering works all weekend - and other West Midlands or Welsh stations may be affected.

Meanwhile, Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway (LNR) and West Midlands Railway (WMR) services to, from and via Wolverhampton will be affected by engineering works.

Rail replacement buses will be in operation all weekend, according to WMR.

Today (Saturday), LNR/WMR services between Shrewsbury and New Street will be diverted between Wolverhampton and New Street, while tomorrow, trains between Shrewsbury and New Street will terminate at Wolverhampton.

CrossCountry trains will not call at Wolverhampton and no Transport for Wales (TfW) services will run between the city and New Street/Birmingham International today and tomorrow.

LNR and WMR services between Liverpool Lime Street and New Street will be diverted between Wolverhampton and New Street and will not call at Smethwick Galton Bridge.

Trains between Wolverhampton and Walsall will run between New Street and Walsall only, and stopping services between Wolverhampton and New Street will not operate.

Routes affected over the weekend include CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly and New Street/Bristol Temple Meads/Reading/Southampton Central/Bournemouth/Paignton/Plymouth.

Avanti West Coast trains between New Street and Wolverhampton will be diverted, running via Soho/Bescot Stadium.

Its trains to, from and via New Street will be on a reduced timetable and people should use alternative services for Sandwell and Dudley.
